10 Compelling Reasons to Live on an Island
5/15/20252 min read

I wake up every morning and count my blessings that I get to live on the water. Yes, I spend most of my time in a small town in Mexico on the Sea of Cortez: Puerto Peñasco, aka Rocky Point. The community where I call home is called Islas Del Mar (Islands of the Sea). One side of the island is the Sea of Cortez and the other three sides are lagoons, which are great for kayaking. I love that you have to cross a bridge to get to our little stretch of an island, but I do often wonder: if something happens to the bridge, then what? I thought I would share ten compelling reasons to live on an island with you.
1. Natural Beauty Everywhere
Island living presents breathtaking views that are hard to find elsewhere. From sunrises over tranquil waters to stunning sunsets that paint the sky, the scenery adds a unique charm to everyday life. Being surrounded by natural beauty can greatly enhance your mood and overall well-being!
2. Close-Knit Communities
Life on an island often means being part of a close-knit community. With fewer residents, you have the chance to forge deeper relationships with neighbors. Many islanders are known for their friendly and welcoming nature, making it easier to feel at home.
3. Laid-Back Lifestyle
One of the most appealing aspects of island life is the relaxed pace. Many islands thrive on a slower rhythm, allowing you to enjoy life without the stress of urban hustle. This laid-back lifestyle encourages you to savor moments, whether it’s a leisurely stroll on the beach or a delicious meal at a local café.
4. Outdoor Adventures Galore
Living on an island offers endless outdoor activities, from snorkeling and surfing to hiking and fishing. If you enjoy exploring nature, you’ll have no shortage of adventures right at your doorstep. The sea and surrounding landscapes provide a perfect playground for activities that keep both your body and spirit happy.
5. Delicious Fresh Seafood
For seafood lovers, life on an island is a dream come true. Fresh catches of the day become a staple of your diet, and there’s nothing like indulging in a delicious seafood feast prepared with ingredients that are often sourced just a few steps away from the water. Experience the rich flavors of the ocean with the freshest options available!
6. Unique Culture and Traditions
Islands typically have their unique cultures and traditions that offer a sense of identity and pride. Living amidst these customs allows you to immerse yourself in vibrant festivals, music, arts, and cuisine that can broaden your horizons and enrich your life.
7. Minimalist Living
Island life often encourages a more minimalist approach. With limited space and resources, it’s common to prioritize what truly matters. This shift can lead to a more fulfilling lifestyle focused on experiences rather than material possessions.
8. Peace and Serenity
Many islands are known for their tranquility, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The calming sounds of waves, the gentle breeze, and fewer distractions contribute to a sense of peace that is hard to replicate. Living in such an environment can significantly lower stress levels.
9. Environmentally Conscious Living
Many island communities champion sustainability and environmentally friendly practices. Living on an island often means being conscious of your surroundings and engaging in practices that protect the earth. It’s a great way to contribute positively to the environment while enjoying the natural beauty that surrounds you.
10. Adventure Awaits
Finally, living on an island is often synonymous with adventure. The isolation can lead to unexpected experiences, whether it’s discovering hidden beaches, exploring lush forests, or making friends with locals. Every day can feel like a new adventure waiting to unfold!
